Tell us about your path to working at Rivian.
In my career I've always focused on entrepreneurship, startups and early-stage companies. Prior to Rivian I was a Director of Operations at a coworking spaces company, which at the time was a high growth organization expanding their footprint across the globe. I had been a fan of Rivian since 2018, just by way of being a tech enthusiast and always having an interest in emerging technologies. I knew some colleagues that I'd worked with at previous startups who were starting to join Rivian, and it caught my interest. After having a few preliminary conversations and learning more about the company, I knew I wanted to be a part of Rivian's growth journey.
Tell us about your experience of working at Rivian so far?
My experience thus far has been action packed! It has not been easy, but it has been exponentially rewarding. I've grown a lot as a leader since joining Rivian. It's been the right environment to unlock new skills, enhance existing skills, and push myself to boundaries that I probably would not have reached on my own. My experience here is also amplified by an amazing support system within my immediate working teams and peer groups. I'm surrounded by people who want to see me win and aren't afraid to give feedback when needed.
What do you love about your job?
What I love most about my role is working with my East Coast Vehicle Operations leaders. They are a group of expert operators with amazing backgrounds and personalities. They truly keep me on my toes in the best way possible. I feel that a huge part of my growth has come from learning from them and being inspired by them. I'm honored and privileged to be their leader and work on their behalf to help solve problems, achieve company goals, and being a collaborator for their professional development journeys.
What advice would you give to anyone considering working at Rivian?
There's no version of success at Rivian that doesn't involve collaboration with different team members/stakeholders. Being able to work with others towards a common goal is so essential to what we do. As we continue to grow, we will need more and more people that are up for that challenge and focused on achieving success through collaboration.
What excites you about the future of Rivian within this space?
In 2022, we went through a lot of logistical challenges, supply chain challenges, economy challenges, etc. All of which we felt so far in 2023 as well. Even in the midst of that we've been able to achieve some incredible company milestones. I'm excited to be locked in with my colleagues and our mission because the sky is the limit, and we only go up from where we've been.
Tell us about your path to Rivian!
I began my career in retail at a large consumer electronics & appliances company where I had the opportunity to sharpen my customer service skills and eventually was able to learn more about the operations side of the business. Shortly after, I had the opportunity to join a Fitness and Media company in their Field Operations Team. Unfortunately, I found myself in a massive layoff, but fortunately, a former colleague recommended Rivian to me. Rivian’s mission of sustainability and Keeping the World Adventurous Forever truly resonated with me so I decided to apply.
How has your experience been so far?
I was hired as a Vehicle Operations Specialist and have now been promoted to a Senior Vehicle Operations Specialist. My experience with Rivian has always shown me that they truly care to put people in the position for growth and advancement. The culture at Rivian is what I love the most about my job; everyone is truly a team player. Feeling appreciated for your contributions and hard work really helps motivate me and makes me feel empowered. Being a part of a company that will actually consider your ideas on how to make processes work better just makes you feel heard and like you can make a difference. The hardest part that I’ve experienced with Rivian is adjusting to all the pivoting that the D.C service center has gone through with having two temporary sites before our permanent site finally opened, along with the growing pains of a newer automotive company.
What advice do you have for women wanting to join this industry?
The automotive industry when anyone thinks about it, their first thought is that it’s male-dominated. They’re not 100% wrong in the sense that there are more men than women in it but being in the industry as a woman, it doesn’t really feel like it is. The only thing that makes a difference for me personally is that I’m short and can’t physically reach the whole R1’s without assistance of steps. And having to learn how to communicate with different personalities, but that can be with men or women.
My advice to women who are interested in applying, don’t let the male dominance of the industry stop you from joining a company with great values. All the people I’ve met here at Rivian are amazing souls and so accepting to everyone, with a bunch of strong empowering women. I’ve forever longed for a job that truly cares about their employees, has a good work/life balance, and is honestly fun.
What is one thing you wish people knew about your role?
Finally finding a place that actually uses your strengths and helps you build and work on your weaknesses, is something very hard to find. The level of partnership, that I have experienced with members of our cross functional teams at my Service Center in D.C. is just unbelievable, we’re like family. We really are One Team. This wasn’t where I thought I would end up, but I am so glad I did.
